Arabic Dance Music.

Arabic dance music is very varied and there are both 'pop' and folk variants for you to explore. Although, if you are European, the tones and rhythms sound very strange to begin with do persist as your ear will adjust quite quickly, then you can start to appreciate the rich material that's available. As far as recording quality is concerned you can find every grade including albums that are studio quality and other items - mostly on tape - that appear to have been recorded in a toilet somewhere obscure. To get the best quality go to official outlets and choose your material on CD.
All the mainline record shops will have a section labelled 'World Music' - but only those in the larger cities will have a reasonable selection. Alternatively you can browse the web and select your music from the many online music shops. We've included a few links to sites that sell Arabic dance music on our links page. You shouldn't yield to temptation and accept bootleg tapes. It's illegal, and the poor quality of a tape that's often several generations away from the original certainly shows - particularly if you're wanting to use it at any substantial volume. As you increase the volume of the tape it looses its clarity, and if you're going to run a Hafla, or similar event, you'll want it loud and clear!

We've been collecting for many years now and have built up a good selection of material. Follow this link to our Top Ten favourite CD's of Arabic Music. We're not yet sophisticated enough at web design to give you examples of the music but if you follow the music links on our Links page you'll find sites where you can get to hear a sample of a track before you buy.
